however instead of the prof in question sitting at home reading a paper, in my case, he was home worrying about a dentist appointment later in the day... sometimes real life *is* stranger than fiction. ;-P

Yes it was SO what happened to you!!!
Also an eminent person in one of my fields who was the MS advisor of my "new" (this year) labmate stood someone up at his defense in a highly similar way.
I put the comic on our lab computer desktop this week and she got the reference immediately.
